The REAL ID Act of 2005 established minimum security standards surrounding security, authentication, and issuance standards for state-issued driver's licenses and identity documents. It also prohibits federal agencies from accepting drivers’ licenses or ID cards from states not meeting the act’s minimum standards, such as accessing federal facilities or boarding federally regulated commercial aircraft. After Oct. 1, 2021, every individual over age 18 will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or another acceptable form of ID to fly within the United States.
